I laughed. I cried. It was a fantastic book (I heard it's a NYTimes Bestseller and I can see why!), but I also think it will be the start of a new, transformative Movement! No one wants to have a stroke as Jill Bolte Taylor did, but her experience can teach us all how to live better lives. Her TED.com speech was one of the most incredibly moving, stimulating, wonderful videos I've ever seen. Her Oprah Soul Series interviews were fascinating. They should make a movie of her life so everyone sees it. This is the Real Deal and gives me hope for humanity.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-4392539943596700142008-01-29T21:31:00.000-05:002008-01-29T21:31:00.000-05:00Cinebeats, yes, Clark in Ganja & Hess. Watching her, I made the same mewling noise Hess made when he was having that religious seizure.

Yes yes, we NEED an Odienator.com, but you are about to enjoy the next best thing in February, when he takes over Big Media Vandalism.

Patrick, I have only glanced at some episodes of The Wire and have the terrible suspicion that it is no more than epic, sophisticated neo-blaxploitation. The world says I'm wrong, so I plan to watch the whole damn 900-episode thing at some point, to see what's what.Boonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02857832534463228577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-66457805565139523872008-01-15T18:57:00.000-05:002008-01-15T18:57:00.000-05:00For me, American Gangster was made completely irre...For me, American Gangster was made completely irrelevant by The Wire, a work that does for the 'ghetto film' what The Sopranos did to mob movies, cut through all the posturing and mythology to reveal something truer and more human. Denzel Frank Lucas doesn't come close to matching the complexity and charisma of Avon or Stringer.Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09483689490186954593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-54950071378780962102008-01-14T19:38:00.000-05:002008-01-14T19:38:00.000-05:00I forget to mention...For an incredibly erotic bla...I forget to mention...

For an incredibly erotic black film with lots of closeups of an absolutely stunning Marlene Clark, you can't beat Ganja & Hess. I first discovered your blog thanks to Aaron Grahm's blog (More Than Meets the Mogwai) who pointed out your great interviews with Armond White and I was happy to come across this insightful conversation with Odienator.

Speaking of Odienator, I have to ask, when is he going to start his own blog? I always enjoy reading what you have to say Odienator in rare posts I come across at blogs like Edward Copeland on Film. I even enjoy reading the comments you leave in other blogs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-91877165346050223342008-01-14T17:51:00.000-05:002008-01-14T17:51:00.000-05:00Boone & Odienator-It's cool you looked at my site,...Boone & Odienator-
It's cool you looked at my site, thanks for reading. I was really thrilled by your conversation but late for work, so I just dropped a quick thanks, but yeah, great discussion. Especially the analysis of Denzel's inability to ever give himself over to a character he plays.

Good call on Johari from 'Chinese Bookie' as well.brandonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05331746353766612879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-40556078610463477882008-01-14T16:24:00.000-05:002008-01-14T16:24:00.000-05:00^"other than" -- oops.^"other than" -- oops.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-51473423545293267502008-01-14T16:15:00.000-05:002008-01-14T16:15:00.000-05:00Thank you, Brandon. In a real-life convo with Odie, I mentioned being awed by a simple, lovely closeup of Tisha Campbell in the teen comedy House Party, of all things. I was 17 and had never seen a young black woman looking so radiantly beautiful on the big screen.

Odie, those black strippers in The Landlord, along with Diana Sands and Pearl Bailey... dee stroyed me last year at the Film Forum. This wasn't "crossover" black beauty; this was a cinematographer taking care to bring out the vibrancy of skin tones other Hepburn pale.

(See also Azizi Johari in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. No great actress, but, as photographed by Al Ruban, a goddess.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-89844293356756742312008-01-14T15:45:00.000-05:002008-01-14T15:45:00.000-05:00Brandon, thanks for the comment.sphodros, that's a...Brandon, thanks for the comment.

sphodros, that's a great moment in Killer of Sheep. People can check it out when TCM runs it this month. But it's a beautiful moment in a great film I had the privilege of seeing for the first time years ago.

We had to wait a long time before the camera treated minority women to gorgeous close-ups (like in 1970's The Landlord). So let me throw out a couple: Nia Long in love jones, which is still the most erotic Black movie of the last 10 years. She and Larenz Tate have serious chemistry and are both afforded some nice camera time. I like Tarantino's linger on Pam Grier in Jackie Brown. And I love this video, proof that it's impossible not to fall in love with Jill Scott if you grew up around the way.odienatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10926978706604468636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-19900537045000285662008-01-14T15:05:00.000-05:002008-01-14T15:05:00.000-05:00Great conversation. They have little understanding ...Great conversation.

They have little understanding that Black audiences are still starved for the kind of ethereal/sensual (rather than simply chaste/prurient) images of themselves that whites took for granted as early as the 1930's.

The most erotic thing I saw in film in 2007 was from a thirty-year-old naturalistic black drama: watching Stan's wife run her hands over his naked torso while they (barely) slow-danced to "This Bitter Earth" in Killer of Sheep. It was a gut-punch of sensuality that wasn't the least bit prurient. So cheers for a black film claiming that "Most Erotic Moment" title, jeers for it being a 30-year old black film. :(Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-51152761696632479242008-01-14T13:26:00.000-05:002008-01-14T13:26:00.000-05:00This was an excellent read.
