I've been preparing my review of "Blue Collar" and listening to that wonderful box set Warner Bros. put out of Pryor's old comedy albums - and I've got to say, yes, you nailed this film perfectly.

Further proof that the shag-carpeted, bell-bottomed '70s may just have been the best thing to happen to American cinema since the advent of titty shots. A very observant, very funny, very angry - and ultimately, very sad - film.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-33518346354245417082011-02-07T14:12:30.045-05:002011-02-07T14:12:30.045-05:00Great review. Like THE FRONT (another film that deals in themes of division via fear by the PTB) this was a flop in its time that now looks like one of the decade's very best films. It's not only Pryor's best performance, I think it is Kotto's best as well.

Dead on IMO about the Pryor/Keitel bond. Easy to see the trust there, given how much their families hung out. Clearly each trusted the other not to let something slip about Kotto's parties in front of the wives.

IMO Schrader never came close to this film again as a director. Some kudos to Captain Beefheart too for a killer performance on "Hard Workin' Man" that helps set the tone perfectly.Halhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09291930694234773688noreply@blogger.com
