I didn't know that one.

When Foxx had his IRS troubles, he said IRS stood for "It's Redd Singing," a nod to his occasional singing on albums. I remember at the end of Video In A Plain Brown Wrapper, he sang "Exactly Like You," which alluded back to the "Zackaly" joke he told earlier in the show (and which I linked to in the piece above).

Even though I hated Harlem Nights, I loved both him and Della Reese in it. It was great seeing them together on The Royal Family, especially every time Foxx said "Motherfather!" I wanted him to slip up so badly, and cause the CBS eye to explode.

Foxx also had the lead, along with Pearl Bailey, in the sitcomish 1976 movie Norman, Is That You? I remember this being the first time my parents attempted to keep me away from something involving Redd Foxx. "But it's rated PG!" I begged. "NO!" said my mother. I know why now, not that I would have understood the subject matter at the time.odienatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10926978706604468636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14169925.post-63851771195696889472009-02-05T21:37:00.000-05:002009-02-05T21:37:00.000-05:00This is a great write-up on a truly great show. O...This is a great write-up on a truly great show. One of my favorite Redd Foxx moments is towards the end of his career when he was doing late night Vegas or Reno shows, and he would have a band play the classic Sanford and Son theme song, The Streetbeater, as he would make his entrance onto the stage. Upon seeing that the venue was less than half full, Foxx said something to the exten of 'fuck this' and walked off the stage. Nobody knew what to do, so the band just started playing The Streetbeater again, as Foxx left the stage.

The Simpson's did a parody of this when Steve Martin was a guest voice playing Springfield's sanitation commisoner. He is upset that the town only needs him when they are in a jam, so he tells them they're screwed and proceeds to walk off the stage. They even used Quincy Jones' famous song as the punchline.

Anyway. Great stuff. I look forward to the rest of the months entries.Kevin J. So did I, but I also hunted down the harder to find Redd Foxx records. I'm especially partial to the King Records releases that were recorded at The Redd Foxx club circa 1970. Great stuff, and I was shocked as hell when I finally hunted down a LaWanda Page record too!

Foxx's great performance in COTTON COMES TO HARLEM led to his casting as Sanford. That'd be another great film for the series.

If I remember right, "Champipple" was actually Champagne and Ripple. But that was just one of the many blended products made available at the Fred G. Sanford Winery (I bet the "G" stood for Grapes). Once he decided a concoction tasted like Ripple that's gone flat, thus Flapple was born; cream was mixed with Ripple once to make "Cripple", and so on. Absolutely hilarious every time.Halhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09291930694234773688noreply@blogger.com
